Quartet

Press Release: What sorts of relationships and negotiations form around an artist’s legacy? This question forms the core of artist Jill Magid’s inquiry into Mexican architect and Pritzker Prize-winner Luis Barragán (1902–1988). For her project based on Barragán’s personal and professional archive and library, Magid explores ownership versus authorship, and the obsessions surrounding the preservation of legacy. Magid's investigations are a re-imaging and re-presentation of material from the archives as determined by their legal status. At the South London Gallery, Magid considers Barragán alongside Samuel Beckett, an author Barragán admired. Magid stages Beckett’s teleplay Quad and a new performance she has composed for the occasion. Following her performance, an installation of Magid’s teleplay Quartet will be on view on Saturday 17 and Sunday 18 May from 11am-6pm in the Clore Studio.
